Haunted Homes: True Ghost Stories is an American horror anthology television miniseries, starring David Hasselhoff and Jennifer Aniston, that first aired on CBS and UPN in May 1991. This was the first series in what would become a long running series of haunted house productions on television. It is notable for its attention to the ghostly aspects of the unexplained, as well as for the often macabre nature of its premise (a series of haunted houses in the New York area). Many people compare it to the Coen brothers' The Conjuring, but it is more of a horror film. If you enjoy watching horror movies, then this is a definite must-see film.
Based on a true story, Haunted Homes tells the tale of a group of friends who get trapped in an old house and must find help in order to get out alive. Although it contains a lot of humor, it does take itself seriously at times. The true ghost storiesin this film are almost as scary as the real ghost stories. The real "scary" ghost stories are usually more ghostly and vanish into the abyss before the viewer can know that there is a ghost involved. The haunted house set, on the other hand, only appears to be ordinary when the camera lens is trained on it.
The story begins in episode one, titled "The Haunting." Kate and her friends Mark, Travis, and Travis' friend Debra had decided to go on a" Ghosts and Legends" exploration. As the girls slept, they heard a sound that they thought was the boys' voices. As the alarm wailed, they quickly ducked down and wrapped their sleeping bags around themselves. When they opened the covered box, they discovered that the sleeping children were missing.
Following the discovery, Kate and her friends were missing, too. Kate and her friends trekked through the woods trying to look for them. When they finally reached the spot where the girls had gone missing, they discovered two human skulls. The next episode takes place in the park, where Kate and the other teens investigate the skull's connection to the other human skulls.
In true ghost stories, you will find a lot of scenes with dark and foggy atmosphere. When you watch the television version of the true stories, there is more freedom given to the director to add those atmospheric elements. When you watch the movie version, you must turn on your TV's light or use the dimmer switch to control the clarity of the film. The jump scare and the blood are more gruesome and realistic, although the animation used for some of the scenes is a bit less detailed than it should be. That is why I feel it is more appropriate for Halloween and not true ghost stories.
There are many things I like about true ghost stories. Aside from the fun factor, you can feel a closer relation to the characters and the real ghost or spirit. And of course, the whole story is much more thrilling and exciting. I recommend watching Rose Hall one night, especially if you happen to be from Chicago.
