There are obviously lots of discussions on what makes people happy and what doesn't. One strain of thought dominates and the discussion goes something like this. I won £12m on the lottery, but it's not the money that makes me happy, it is the volunteering I do, driving old people to bingo and back or tending to my tomatoes. But I view these statements with real caution because in a nutshell, when you don't have any financial worries and you don't need to work of course these activities make you happy. However they would not be done with so much vim if you were financially stressed and couldn't afford a car, worries over feeding the kids or losing your house. So in my view, money can make you afford to be happy, or at least can pay for your family to live and eat and remove plenty of worries.
Worries are about the future state of our lives. We have worried so much in the past and have still made it through haven't we. So experience has taught me not to worry about the future. But is that because I can afford this mind-state?
Am I capable of calmness and serenity if my world fell apart? We shall see.
